Oedo Antique Market
When the Shogunate was established in 1603, Edo became the center of Japan's government, culture, and economy. 2002 marked the advent of the 400th anniversary of that event. Edo was a thriving, verdant metropolis, with abundant water resources, of more than a million people by the latter half of the 18th century.
Since then it developed into one of the major cities of the world where more than 12 million people live and work. "Oedo Antique Fair" is an opportunity to see first-hand the historical and cultural treasures produced by master artisans from that period when Edo was transformed into the present day Tokyo.
The 21st century marks the dawn of a new era as well as the 400th anniversary of the establishment of the Edo Shogunate, and in conjunction with that, Oedo Antique Fair provides glimpses into the life and times of the people throughout the seasons of successive generations from Edo, through Meiji, and up to the present. In a metropolis already brimming with cultural and historical treasures, it is hoped that this fair will be a further addition of lasting prominence.
